THE ASSOCIATION OF COLON ANDRECTAL SURGEONS OF INDIA(A Section of ASI)
R B Singh
Hon. Secretary of ACRSI. Consultant Surgeon, Lilavati Hospital, Mumbai.
When I was asked by Dr. MM Begani to write an article in this prestigious Journal which is bringing out an issue in the memory of Late Dr. Pramod Kumar Jhawer, I thought the best way to pay tribute to Dr. PK Jhawer is to write about the association which was so dear and close to his heart. He had worked very hard and brought the ACRST to a great height during his tenure as Hon. Secretary before I succeeded him as the Hon. Secretary and he was elected as Vice-President (West zone) of the ACRSI. I congratulate and acknowledge with great appreciation and emotions the Bombay Hospital Journal and its guest editors Dr. MM Begani and NG Agarwal to publish this issue in the memory of Dr. Jhawar a great human being and the surgeon of a great repute and respect.
The association of colon and rectal surgeons of India is the brain child of doyen of surgery in India, the great teacher and academician Dr. RK Menda. Dr. Menda with his dedication and committment established the association in 1977 with only 17 (seventeen) members. The aims and objectives of this association is to promote and encourage developments and advancement of colo-rectal surgery as a speciality and to spread the art and science of managing the colo-rectal diseases to every nook and corner of our great nation.
The association under the leadership of Dr. RK Menda and his disciples Dr. PN Joshi and Dr. Chulani increased its membership and went on growing from strength to strength. The aims and objectives of the association is fulfilled by organising annual and national (mid-term) conference, live workshop and seminars all over the country on zonal basis.
The association has been divided into 5 (five) zones to co-ordinate its academic activities. The zones are West, North, East, South and Central zone. Each zone is represented by a vice-president and which is the nucleus of the association and its governing body. The executive committee consists of following office bearers.
President, Hon. Secretary, Treasurer, five zonal vice presidents, five members, editor of the journal of colo-proctology. There are 2 (two) coapted posts of joint secretary and academic convenor to help the Hon. Secretary in co-ordinating the various academic activities of ACRSI. The executive committee officials are elected by the members of the association for two years term except the editor whose term is for six years.
The head office of ACRSI is at Mumbai. The Hon. Secretary, Treasurer and the joint secretary are elected from Mumbai only in order to facilitate and co-ordinate the smooth functioning of the association. The ACRSI enrols only life members since 1994. The membership fee is Rs.1000/0 (One thousand) only. I am happy to write that the present membership of ACRSI has reached 500 (five hundred) members and is growing every month.
One of the most prestigious and first project which Dr. PK Jhawar had initiated when he was Hon. Secretary in 1996 is the training courses in colo-rectal surgery which has become one of the most popular course. The first 'Instructional course' commenced in 1997 at Ajmer. I had the full co-operation, guidance and help from Dr. PK Jhawar in planning this course when I succeeded him as the Hon. Secretary in 1997. The Instructional training courses are run by the association twice a year. The first course of the year is conducted during April or May as the 'Basic course' and the second advance course is conducted during national conference during September or October month. Each course lasts for five days with one day of live workshop with hands on training to the registered candidates. The maximum number enrolled for each course is 50 (fifty) only. The registration fee for basic course is Rs.1500/- and for the advance course Rs.2000/- only respectively. These 'Instructional training courses' are for the general surgeons who would like to specialize as colo-rectal surgeons. After completing both the courses candidate can appear in a fellowship in colo-rectal surgery examination conducted by the ACRSI.
The first examination will be held at Mumbai from 24th April, 2000. The examination will be held in three parts. Part will be MCQ papers part 2nd will be orals and part 3rd will be clinical.
