ABSTRACTS OF PAPERS AT THE 75TH RESEARCH MEETING OF THE MEDICAL RESEARCH CENTRE OF BOMBAY HOSPITAL ON MONDAY, 13TH MARCH 2000, 2.30 PM, SP JAIN CAFETERIA (CONVENOR DR. HL DHAR)

1. PSEUDOPHAKIC RD

Apurva Kotia, Karobi Lahiri

This paper deals with the incidence of occurrence of RD following ECC, ICCE, and phako procedures. The difficulty encountered in the treatment of this detachment and way to overcome the same will be highlighted.

2. POST LASIK RD

Manoj Kakkar, Karobi Lahiri

This topic needs emphasis as this could be a possible sequel to a modality of treatment very prevalent these days in treatment of refractive errors. The reported retinal complications arising out of the procedure, the theories behind its causation and preventive measures with precautions will be highlighted.

3. EVALUATION OF THE SKULL-BASE AND THE VOCAL TRACT

N K Apte, V G Kasbekar, Benaifer Dadabhai, Sunil Budhrani

The Skull-base and the hard palate are sandwiched between the brain and the respiratory and alimentary passages. The organs of speech are the nose, nasal cavity, oral cavity, cheeks, palate, teeth, pharynx and larynx. The evolution of the skull-base in relation to these organs is interesting and important for better understanding the surgical management of congenital malformations of the skull in children. The purpose of the paper is to highlight the importance of functional improvement in establishing a normal speech part from anatomic correction of the defect done routinely. The change. over of habital from aquatic to teresterial in vertebrates has resulted in the evolutionary changes in the skull-base and the vocal tract. The changes in the skull base are due to enormous development of the cerebral hemisphere resulted in elongating the post part while the eruption of the second dentition has elongated the palate - the anterior half. The spheno - occipital angulation (Welcker’s angle - 120 - 150 degrees) has resulted in changing the direction of the foramen magnum facing downwards instead of horizontally. The change in position of the temporo-mandibular joints and development of jaws have been due to change in the food habits from herbivorous to carnivore. The development of the neo-pallium (cerebral hemispheres), the palate and cross-over of the air and food passages due the development of nasopharynx are the important landmarks for the development of normal speech in man. Man alone can speak. Animals make noise but not speak.

Understanding the development of clefts, dystosis and craniostenosis during the intrauterine development of foetus, genetic and molecular biology would help in preventing the occurrence of the hideous malformation and correct them by gama knife in the next millennium.
