ABSTRACTS OF PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE 91ST RESEARCH MEETING OF THE MEDICAL RESEARCH CENTRE OF BOMBAY HOSPITAL ON MONDAY, 8TH OCTOBER 2001, 2.30 PM SP JAIN CAFETERIA (CONVENOR DR. HL DHAR)

1. LASER FOR SUB INTERNAL LIMITING MEMBRANE HAEMORRHAGE

Rupali Nagpal, Ujwala Jadhav, Karobi Lahiri
Seven patients were treated for sub internal limiting membrane haemorrhage and sub hyaloid haemorrhage ND Yag laser 5 and Argon laser 2 were used to treat the pooled blood. Efficacy was seen in 5 out of 7 patients with good resolution

2. LASER FOR THRESHOLD / PRETHRESHOLD FOR ROP

Ujwala Jadhav, Rupali Nagpal, Karobi Lahiri

Retrospective study of 2700 preterm of which 5% 135 pts – 254 eye ) went into threshold diseases were treated with Laser /Cryo or combination. Regression was noted in 122 patients. Progression of diseases were treated with buckle/vitrectomy procedure.

3. EVALUATION OF PNEUMORETINOPEXY - A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY FOR REDETATCHMENT CASES

To evaluate the efficacy of pneumoretinopexy in cases of Retinal Redetachment.

A retrospective study was carried out on 21 patients (21 eyes) who underwent
pneumoretinopexy for the treatment of retinal detachment. Of these, 8 patients (38% ) had redetachment following buckle, while 13 patients (62% ) had redetachment of following vitrectomy. Ten patients were phakic while 11 patients were pseudophakic . Age of the patients ranged from 20 – 60 years with the most common age group being 50 –60 years. Out of 21 patients, 15 were male and 6 were female. Macular status was on in 7 patients (33.3% ), and off in 14 patients (66.6%). Timing of pneumoritinopexy was at 2-8 weeks in 10 patients (47.6%), at 8 weeks - 6 months in 7 patients (33.5%) at 6 months - 1 year in 2 patients ( 9.5 %) and beyond 1 year in 2 patients ( 9.5%). The Adhesion was achieved by laser in 12 patients ( 57.1% ) by Cryo in 6 patients (28.5%) and by a combination of both in 3 patients (14.3%).

In the vitrectomy group the reattachment was achieved in 10 out of 13 patients (76.9%). Of these 3 patients who required retreatment in this group, one got cured while the other 2 patients required surgical correction. In the buckle group the reattachment of retina was achieved in 5 out of 8 patients ( 62.5% ). Out of 3 patients who required retreatment, 2 were cured while 1 required surgery. The overall reattachment rate was 85.7% (18 out of 21 patients ). Fish egg phenomenon was seen in 5 patients (23 .8%). The common complications were proliferative vitreo retinopathy and new break formation seen in 3 patients each . One patient each developed bleeding and increased intra ocular pressure . Ten patients showed an increase in visual acuity from 6/60 to 6/24, 6 patients from 6/18 to 6/12, 3 patients from PL to HM, 1 patient from HM to FC and 1 patient from 6/9 to 6/6.

Pneumoretinopexy is a simple, safe and effective non invasive procedure for retinal reattachment which can be performed on an out patient basis with good success rate and minimal complications.
