Extracorporeal Shock-Wave Lithotripsy is an extremely useful alternative to surgery as far as the kidney and ureteric stones are concerned. The problem is the cost, which the middle class and poor patients cannot afford. R Karunanithi et al from KJ Hospital, Chennai, on pg 434, have reported an indigenous electrode for generating shocks in the lithotripter with good results. If many such studies are conducted to confirm this, the whole cost of lithotripsy in Indian patients can be brought down dramatically. Also on pg 446, the imaging specialists should read the article on "Film Screen Incompatibility - a serious problem to reckon with" by R Karunanithi et al, from KJ Hospital, Chennai to avoid getting bad images.
