The world has been familiar with sex since
Biblical times or more. Sexual gratification has been a need of man just as hunger or thirst. Even Vatsyayana in his world classic and world renowned book, “Kamasutra” has emphasized the importance of sex for fulfillment of life. He acknowledges that sex in married life can become a chore. Therefore altered position and postures in sex have been described. He was the first to describe the importance of foreplay, as prelude to the sexual act because it leads to fuller sexual satisfaction. Feminine orgasms as is being increasingly recognised today was recognised by Vatsyayana who counselled after play, if the act led to inadequate satisfaction of the woman.
The love children (Hippies) of the sixties brought a new dimension to sex by taking the aid of drugs like Marijuana, LSD and Cocaine. So the four letter word “love” became superceded by the three letter word sex. Free sex was widely advocated by many including Osho (Acharya Rajneesh) who encouraged his followers to indulge in free and open sex.
Anal sex (Sodomy) has also been widely known and oral sex i.e. the man inserting his organ in the woman’s mouth, so that she can suck and give him a good erection. Oral sex has been recommended by ancient medical practitioners as a treatment of impotence and as means of sexual gratification.
Sex has become a big word today. Sex in movies, T.V., Documentaries and books. Sex sells!! So every magazine and the newspaper has a section reserved on sexual matters. With pornography being widely available on the Internet, growing children and adolescents spend a lots of time on the computers, looking for sexual stimulation. This can take the form of nudes, computer graphics, vulgar words and stories, chats with prospective partners and question and answer forum. The papers are not far behind. Many of them discuss methods how to arouse your man, how to improve your sexuality and contain some hot tips on mechanical devices and stimulators that can be used on erotic zones to provoke sexual feelings. Tele sex is an off shoot of pornography in which two people chat and talk about sexual situation, mimick sexual sounds and discuss sexual experience.
When I put on the radio as I drive for my exercise many times I do not hear the meliflous voice of Amin Sayani talking about musical hit parade but I hear youngsters being interviewed by mischievous and questionable radio jockey. These people provoke the audience to share their sexual experience, encounters, binges, and pyjama parties with the rest of the audience. I call this Radio sex. Radio is being used here as a medium to sexually stimulate people.
There is surely need for sex education in high schools but one has to draw a line between information and pornography. With AIDS and HIV infection spreading widely there is a strong case for informing youngsters that sex is not only about erection or orgasm or a wet dream but also about preventing communicable diseases. The way sex is being promoted by the media, it will only lead to increased promiscuity. There may be not many takers for celibacy today but surely there is need for sublimation.
