Over a period of the past few years, we have been performing, writing and presenting Day-case surgery. We have come across several questions and suggestions. The two most common questions raised are: ‘Why do you need a separate speciality?’ and ‘Is day care a super-speciality?’ To our mind, if Day surgery has to reach its full caliber, then it has to be presented as a separate entity and as a super-speciality.
Super-speciality as Day-case, is in fact self explanatory. In this issue we have tried to present to our readers, articles from all over the world. These are articles written by leaders and pioneers in their respective country and speciality.
It has been seen that ‘Surgeries without overnight hospitalisation’, is a reality. For decades it has been used successfully to deliver top class surgical care to certain cases and thus, helping in the reduction of cost, saving of time and most importantly, freeing beds of an already overburdened healthcare system, which can be utilized for the critically ill patients.
Health insurance plays a major role in the healthcare system of the developed world.
In our country, health care insurance providers still require 24 hours hospitalisation; make it a forceful admission of the patient just to pass his ‘mediclaim’. This indeed is a sad state of affair.
Increasing the awareness seems to be the mantra for the success of day case surgery. We can ‘exploit’ to the fullest, the benefits of ambulatory surgery, provided a successful ‘awareness campaign’ is launched. Targeting doctors and healthcare professionals, hospitals, patients, health care policy makers and insurance providers. A mammoth task, already under process with the help of this esteemed journal.
“Water drops can make hole in stones, not by its force, but by repeated falling on the same spot”- so is true for spreading awareness about Day surgery.
We are very thankful to Dr. O. P. Kapoor, Dr. R. J. Mehta and their Editorial team, for inviting us once again as Guest editors.
