Clinical Paediatrics by NC Joshi. Publisher : Elsevier, 367 pages; Price 590.

Several books are available on Clinical Paediatrics. Pocket books, hand books and short studies but none is devoted to the Post graduate students and exam going candidates. Dr. Joshi's book fills this gap.

Spread over 12 chapters, it focuses on clinical materials, associated investigations and likely questions to be asked. The chapters are arranged system wise and there are plenty of X-rays, charts, photographs and line drawings to help understanding. Each chapter is divided into three parts.
Part I : Basics and disease mechanism.
Part II : Clinical cases and their presentation.
Part III : Investigations, procedures and treatment.

The chapters are further enriched by remarks in the margins boxed and unboxed. It is also supplemented by mnemonics and other aide memories. There is sufficient information on basic sciences, anatomy and embryology to facilitate full comprehension of the subject. Part II of every chapter has columns in which symptoms and their interpretation is explained. This can make reading a difficult job because you have to shuffle between columns and margins to get your facts. Joshi has tacitly acknowledged that, in the introduction where he has written a special page on how to use the book.
Chapter 11 explains lucidly and with great symplicity topics in paediatrics that often lie in the backyard; namely acid base balance, dysmorphic syndromes, genetics and microbiology. Chapter 12 explains to the student how he can study for the exam by regularly examining patients and having a "Guru" with whom to discuss.

Joshi's book is an example of extreme hard work, love for medical education and keen desire to help students. For a single author book, the effort is truly commendable. The book is strongly recommended to DCH, DNB and MD Students. Medical teachers and examiners can also benefit from its reading.

The publishers have done a good job with a nice get up and high quality printing of the book.
